Gupt Navratri Day 4: Worship Goddess Kushmanda in 2025

Gupt Navratri is a sacred and mystical nine-day festival observed twice a year during the months of Magha and Ashadha. Unlike the popularly celebrated Chaitra and Sharadiya Navratri, Gupt Navratri is mainly dedicated to Tantric practices, inner spiritual awakening, and the worship of the ten Mahavidyas (powerful forms of Goddess Durga).

On the fourth day of Ashadha Gupt Navratri 2025, devotees worship Goddess Kushmanda, the fourth form of Maa Durga, known as the creator of the universe.

Who is Goddess Kushmanda?

The name Kushmanda is derived from three words:
Ku = little
Ushma = warmth or energy
Anda = cosmic egg (universe)

According to belief, when there was complete darkness and no existence, the universe came into being through the gentle smile of Maa Kushmanda. She is the source of light and energy in the universe and is said to reside in the core of the Sun.

  7. Recite Durga Saptashati or Durga Chalisa.

  8. Perform Aarti with a sincere heart and seek forgiveness for any errors in the ritual.

The Story of Maa Kushmanda

According to scriptures, before creation, darkness enveloped the entire cosmos. It was then that Maa Kushmanda, with her divine smile, created the cosmic egg—the origin of the universe.

Her brilliance formed the Sun, and she made the solar energy accessible to all living beings. Residing in the Surya Mandala (solar core), she governs the source of all energy and controls the balance of light in the universe.

She is depicted with eight arms, holding weapons like a discus, mace, bow, arrow, a kamandal, rosary, and a pot of nectar, symbolizing power, balance, and grace. Her mount is a lion, indicating bravery and strength.
