The Legend Behind Hartalika Teej

The word Hartalika is derived from two words – Harat (abduction) and Aalika (female friend). According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati’s friend once abducted her to stop her marriage to Lord Vishnu, as her heart was devoted only to Lord Shiva. Parvati performed severe penance in the forest and finally won Lord Shiva’s heart, leading to their divine union. Since then, Hartalika Teej is celebrated as a symbol of unwavering devotion, love, and marital bliss.

Rituals of Hartalika Teej

1. Nishtha Vrat (Fasting):
   Women observe a strict fast for the entire day. Some women follow a nirjala vrat (without food and water), while others keep a fast with fruits and milk.

2. Worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati:
   Clay or metal idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are decorated and worshipped. Devotees offer flowers, fruits, sweets, and sacred items during the puja.

3. All-Night Jagran and Katha:
   Many women stay awake the entire night, singing devotional songs and listening to the Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha, which narrates the story of Goddess Parvati’s penance and marriage to Lord Shiva.

4. Traditional Attire and Mehendi:
   Women dress up in beautiful green sarees or lehengas, apply mehendi (henna) on their hands, and adorn themselves with bangles and jewelry. Green color is considered auspicious as it signifies prosperity and fertility.
