Karwa Chauth 2025: Blessings of love, fasting, and tradition
Karwa Chauth 2025 is a Hindu festival where married women fast from sunrise to moonrise for their husband’s long life and happiness.

Karwa Chauth is one of the most cherished festivals celebrated by married Hindu women across India, especially in North Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh. It symbolizes the deep bond of love and devotion between a wife and her husband, where women observe a day-long fast for the well-being, longevity, and prosperity of their husbands.
Origin and Significance
The word Karwa refers to an earthen pot used to store water, symbolizing prosperity, and Chauth means the fourth day after the full moon. This festival falls on the Chaturthi tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik. Rooted in ancient tradition, Karwa Chauth reflects the commitment, faith, and emotional connection between couples.
Its origin is traced to various legends, including the story of Queen Veeravati, Savitri and Satyavan, and Draupadi from the Mahabharata, each reflecting devotion, sacrifice, and faith in divine blessings.
Rituals and Observance
The day of Karwa Chauth begins before sunrise. Women wake early, take the sargi meal (a pre-dawn thali given by their mothers-in-law) and begin fasting. The fast continues throughout the day — without food or water — until the moon rises.
-
Morning Puja (Sargi): Women eat sargi, consisting of fruits, mithai, and dry fruits, offered with love by the mother-in-law.
-
Afternoon Rituals: Many women gather together for group prayers, dressing in festive sarees, applying mehendi, and sharing karwa gifts.
-
Evening Puja: In the evening, the Karwa Chauth katha (mythological story) is narrated, and prayers are offered for the husband’s long life.
-
Moonrise Ceremony: After sighting the moon through a sieve, women offer water (arghya) to the moon and look at their husband’s face through the sieve before breaking their fast with his hands, marking the completion of the ritual.
Cultural Beauty and Emotional Essence
Karwa Chauth beautifully blends faith and love. It is not just a ritual but a celebration of trust and companionship between partners. Husbands often gift their wives jewelry, sarees, or tokens of appreciation, reinforcing mutual respect and affection.
The aesthetic charm of the festival includes vibrant traditional attire, intricate mehendi designs, decorated thalis, and glowing lamp corners that fill homes with a divine aura.
