Rituals and Observance

The day of Karwa Chauth begins before sunrise. Women wake early, take the sargi meal (a pre-dawn thali given by their mothers-in-law) and begin fasting. The fast continues throughout the day — without food or water — until the moon rises.

• Morning Puja (Sargi): Women eat sargi, consisting of fruits, mithai, and dry fruits, offered with love by the mother-in-law.

• Afternoon Rituals: Many women gather together for group prayers, dressing in festive sarees, applying mehendi, and sharing karwa gifts.

• Evening Puja: In the evening, the Karwa Chauth katha (mythological story) is narrated, and prayers are offered for the husband’s long life.

• Moonrise Ceremony: After sighting the moon through a sieve, women offer water (arghya) to the moon and look at their husband’s face through the sieve before breaking their fast with his hands, marking the completion of the ritual.
