Kawad Yatra 2025: A Sacred Journey of Devotion to Lord Shiva
Kawad Yatra 2025: A sacred Shravan pilgrimage where devotees carry Gangajal for Lord Shiva. Know its significance, dates, types & travel rules.

Every year, the month of Shravan marks the beginning of a spiritually intense and deeply devotional event for Lord Shiva's devotees — Kawad Yatra.
The sight of thousands of saffron-clad Kawadiyas carrying decorated pots of sacred water on their shoulders, walking barefoot for miles, chanting “Bol Bam”, is a reflection of unshakable faith and discipline.
In 2025, the Kawad Yatra will begin in mid-July, coinciding with the start of the Shravan month, and will culminate on Shravan Shivratri, one of the holiest days dedicated to Lord Shiva.
What is Kawad Yatra?
The Kawad Yatra is an annual pilgrimage primarily observed in North India, especially in the states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
During this yatra, devotees fetch Gangajal (holy water from the Ganga river) from sacred ghats like Haridwar, Gaumukh, or Sultanganj, and carry it across long distances to offer to Shiva Lingas in prominent temples such as Kashi Vishwanath (Varanasi), Baidyanath Dham (Deoghar), or Neelkanth Mahadev (Rishikesh).
The Spiritual Significance
The Kawad Yatra has roots in ancient legends. According to mythology, when Lord Shiva consumed the poison (halahal) during the Samudra Manthan, the Devas offered him Ganga water to reduce its effect.
This sacred act is believed to be replicated by the Kawadiyas when they offer Gangajal to Lord Shiva.
Devotees believe that offering Gangajal during the Shravan month pleases Lord Shiva and removes sins, illnesses, and life obstacles.
Who Are the Kawadiyas?
The participants of this yatra are known as Kawadiyas. They carry a Kawad, a bamboo pole with two pots tied at both ends, filled with holy water.
Most Kawadiyas walk barefoot for hundreds of kilometers, observing strict discipline, fasting, and maintaining silence or chanting mantras during their journey.
Types of Kawadiyas
Dak Kawadiya – who run the entire stretch
Sthir Kawadiya – who rest at different halts
Khada Kawadiya – who never put their Kawad on the ground during the entire yatra
