According to Hindu mythology, King Ashwapati had no children despite living a prosperous and righteous life. Desiring a child, he performed severe penance and worshipped Goddess Savitri for many years. Pleased with his devotion, the Goddess blessed him with a virtuous daughter named Savitri.

When Savitri came of age, she chose Satyavan as her husband. Sage Narada warned that Satyavan was destined to die within a year of marriage due to his short lifespan. Despite this prophecy, Savitri remained steadfast in her decision and married him.
